Trojan Horse – Watercolour Print | Liz Wilson

Trojan Horse is a contemplative watercolour created in 2022 by Australian artist Liz Wilson. The painting was inspired by a tiny decorative trinket that sat among the miniature travel treasures displayed in the lounge room of Wilson’s Aunty Ruth — one of many small objects collected during her lifetime of journeys.

Drawn to the quiet symbolism of the object, Wilson translated the form into a minimalist watercolour study, allowing space, atmosphere and subtle washes to carry the emotional weight of the image. Muted greens, aged ochres and weathered greys suggest the passage of centuries, evoking the feeling of an artefact emerging from ancient history.

The simplified hollow form of the horse sits against an atmospheric background reminiscent of worn stone walls and archaeological memory. Through restrained brushwork and deliberate negative space, the work invites contemplation of one of history’s most enduring stories — the legendary Trojan Horse — and the timeless human themes of strategy, deception and hidden intention.

DID YOU KNOW?

The story of the Trojan Horse originates from ancient Greek mythology and the epic tales surrounding the Trojan War, traditionally attributed to Homer. After a decade of failed siege, the Greek army constructed a giant wooden horse and left it outside the walls of Troy as a supposed offering to the goddess Athena.

Unaware that soldiers were hidden inside, the Trojans brought the horse into their fortified city. Under the cover of night the hidden soldiers emerged, opened the gates, and allowed the returning Greek army to enter, leading to the fall of Troy.

Whether myth, allegory or historical memory, the Trojan Horse has endured for over three thousand years as one of the most powerful symbols of strategy, deception and hidden intention. Today the phrase “Trojan horse” is widely used to describe something that appears harmless but conceals a hidden threat.
