Watercolour — Liz Wilson

“The Magpie Whisperer | Mum and Maggie” is a deeply personal early watercolour reflecting the quiet poetry of everyday Australian life.

Inspired by Liz Wilson’s ageing mother and her lifelong connection to nature, the work captures a familiar and intimate ritual — the gentle presence of a magpie companion welcomed onto the back deck. More than a simple interaction, the scene speaks to a nurturing spirit, patience, and the enduring relationships formed between humans and the natural world.

Softly layered washes and expressive brushwork evoke warmth, memory, and atmosphere. The composition celebrates tenderness rather than spectacle — a meditation on care, routine, and the subtle bonds that develop over years of shared space.

As one of the artist’s first explorations in watercolour, the piece carries both artistic and emotional significance, marking the beginning of a visual language rooted in observation, storytelling, and connection to place.

Did You Know?

Magpies hold a unique place in Australian life, known not only for their distinctive song but also for their remarkable intelligence and capacity to recognise human faces.

Many Australians experience long-term relationships with local magpies, particularly in gardens and suburban environments where daily routines foster familiarity and trust.

These interactions often become quiet, personal rituals — small yet meaningful reminders of the deep interconnection between Australian households and native wildlife.

Did you know?

The Australian Magpie is one of the world's most intelligent birds, with cognitive abilities rivaling great apes. They can recognize individual human faces and remember them for years, passing this knowledge to their offspring. In Aboriginal culture, magpies are considered messengers between the physical and spiritual worlds. Their distinctive caroling song, one of the most complex in the avian world, has been described as "the voice of the Australian bush" and can contain over 35 different vocalizations.

Magpies mate for life and fiercely defend their territories during breeding season—the famous "swooping season." However, they also form remarkable bonds with humans who show them respect and kindness. In Australian folklore, magpies symbolize territoriality, intelligence, communication, and the importance of community. The bicycle represents freedom, simple pleasures, and the journey of life, while the café setting speaks to pause, refreshment, and social connection.
