Modern Landscape No. 3 – Abstract Expressionist Landscape Print

Modern Landscape No. 3 is an expressive abstract landscape created by contemporary Balkan artist Genc Gjoka, whose work explores the emotional intensity of landscape through gestural abstraction.

Genc studied at the University of Pristina Art Academy in Kosovo before leaving the region during the turmoil following the Kosovo crisis of the 1990s. His experience of displacement and rebuilding life in Western Europe continues to influence the emotional depth of his paintings. Today he works between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Greece, developing a body of abstract landscapes shaped by memory, movement and instinct.

In this powerful composition sweeping strokes of deep blues, crimson reds and molten gold move across a darkened ground, creating a landscape of energy rather than geography. Organic forms appear and dissolve within the layered brushwork, suggesting pathways, figures or watchful presences embedded within the terrain.

Circular forms resembling eyes emerge from the composition, hinting at awareness within nature itself. The painting carries a sense of restless movement where colour and gesture evoke the raw forces of wind, earth, water and fire.

Rather than depicting a specific place, Genc’s abstract landscapes express the psychological experience of landscape — the emotional terrain that exists between memory, history and the natural world.

DID YOU KNOW?

Abstract Expressionism emerged in the mid-twentieth century as artists sought to express emotional truth through gesture, colour and movement rather than literal representation.

For many painters influenced by political upheaval and migration, abstraction became a language capable of expressing experiences that could not easily be described in conventional imagery.

Artists trained in European academies often combined traditional drawing knowledge with the physical freedom of gestural painting, creating landscapes that express memory, energy and psychological experience rather than topographical description.

The dynamic contrast between reds and deep blues in this painting reflects the symbolic dialogue between opposing natural elements — fire and water, tension and calm, destruction and renewal.
