Modern Landscape No. 1 – Abstract Landscape Expressionist Print | Genc Gjoka

Modern Landscape No. 1 is an expressive abstract landscape created in 2022 by contemporary Balkan artist Genc Gjoka, whose work explores the emotional intensity of landscape through gesture, colour and instinctive movement.

Genc studied at the University of Pristina Art Academy in Kosovo before leaving the region during the upheaval surrounding the Kosovo crisis of the 1990s. The experience of displacement and rebuilding life in Western Europe continues to shape the emotional depth of his work. Today he paints between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Greece, developing a body of abstract landscapes influenced by memory, movement and lived experience.

In this energetic composition sweeping gestural brushwork moves across the surface in luminous teal blues, burnt oranges, deep ultramarine and earth reds. The painting carries a sense of wind, rhythm and motion as layered strokes build a landscape of sensation rather than geography. Circular motifs and swirling forms evoke cycles of growth and transformation, suggesting the perpetual movement of nature.

Rather than depicting a literal location, Genc’s abstract landscapes explore the psychological and emotional experience of landscape, where colour, gesture and rhythm convey the atmosphere and energy of place.

SERIES

This artwork forms part of Genc Gjoka’s Modern Landscape abstract series, a body of paintings exploring the emotional and psychological experience of landscape through expressive gesture and colour.

Across the series, sweeping brushwork and layered colour fields evoke movement in nature — wind through trees, shifting water, and the elemental rhythms that shape the land. Rather than describing a specific location, these works investigate the energy, memory and atmosphere embedded within landscape itself.

Collectors interested in this work may also wish to explore other abstract landscapes by Genc Gjoka available within this collection, where each painting expands the artist’s exploration of colour, motion and expressive mark-making.

Fine art Giclée prints are produced using archival pigment inks on museum-quality paper for exceptional colour depth and longevity.

Available professionally framed in White, Black, Natural, Gold or Brown timber frames, or as a Stretched Ready-to-Hang Canvas.

DID YOU KNOW?

Abstract landscape painting developed in the early twentieth century when artists began exploring colour and gesture as a way to express the emotional essence of landscape rather than its literal appearance. Artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and J.M.W. Turner moved beyond representation to capture atmosphere, movement and sensation.

Many contemporary abstract painters continue this approach by allowing the rhythm of colour and the movement of the brush to guide the painting process. Gesture becomes a visual language capable of expressing energy, tension and transformation.

The vibrant contrast between teal blues and warm oranges in this painting reflects the natural balance between opposing forces — water and fire, calm and turbulence, stability and change — echoing the continual cycles present in nature.
