Dotty

Available professionally framed in White, Black, Natural, Gold, or Brown timber frames, or as a Stretched Ready-to-Hang Canvas.

Charming mixed media painting with playful pattern and texture, created in 2026. I was delighted by the whimsical contrast of a hand-painted polka dot vase holding delicate dried grasses. Using acrylic with deliberate dotting technique, I created the cheerful spotted pattern on the cream-colored vessel each burgundy dot placed by hand with meditative repetition. The soft, feathery grasses in shades of mauve and pink dance above the vase against a warm peachy background, grounded with a dark plum shadow for a composition in a modern geometric style.

Polka dots have a fascinating history dating back to the 1800s, when they became wildly popular during the polka dance craze that swept across Europe and America. The pattern's name directly references this energetic Bohemian dance. Initially considered bold and rebellious, polka dots were embraced by fashion icon Minnie Mouse in the 1920s and later by Christian Dior in the 1950s, transforming them into symbols of playfulness, joy, and vintage charm. Spanish flamenco dancers adopted the "traje de lunares" (costume of moons), making polka dots synonymous with Spanish culture and passion.

In Japanese art and design, dots represent perfection in imperfection—the hand-painted dot will always have slight variations, celebrating human touch over machine precision. Artist Yayoi Kusama built her entire career around dots, calling them representations of infinity and the universe. The repetitive act of creating dots becomes meditative, almost ritualistic. Dried grasses symbolize the beauty of preservation, natural cycles, and finding elegance in simplicity. Together, the playful pattern and natural elements create harmony between human creativity and nature's organic forms.
