Modern Landscape No. 5 – Abstract Expressionist Landscape Print

Modern Landscape No. 5 is a dynamic abstract landscape created in 2022 by contemporary Balkan artist Genc Gjoka, whose work explores the emotional intensity of landscape through gestural abstraction and expressive colour.

Genc studied at the University of Pristina Art Academy in Kosovo before leaving the region during the upheaval surrounding the Kosovo crisis of the 1990s. His experience of displacement and rebuilding life in Western Europe continues to shape the emotional depth of his work. Today he paints between Rotterdam in the Netherlands and Greece, developing a body of abstract landscapes influenced by memory, movement and instinct.

In this striking composition sweeping gestural forms move across a dark ground in deep teal blues, crimson reds and molten gold. The energetic brushwork creates a landscape of movement rather than geography. Layered marks suggest figures, pathways or watchful presences emerging from the terrain itself, while circular forms evoke the idea that the land carries memory and awareness.

Rather than describing a specific location, Genc’s paintings explore the psychological experience of landscape — where colour, gesture and rhythm express the emotional energy of place.

DID YOU KNOW?

Abstract Expressionism emerged in the mid-twentieth century as artists began exploring gesture, colour and movement as a direct expression of emotion and experience. Rather than depicting landscapes realistically, many artists used abstraction to convey the energy and psychological impact of place.

Artists trained in European academies often combined traditional drawing knowledge with spontaneous painting techniques, allowing the physical act of painting to communicate intensity and immediacy.

The dramatic contrast between cool blues and intense reds in this work reflects the symbolic dialogue between opposing natural elements — water and fire, calm and turbulence, destruction and renewal — forces that continually shape both the landscape and human experience.
