Bilby

Available professionally framed in White, Black, Natural, Gold, or Brown timber frames, or as a Stretched Ready-to-Hang Canvas.

Tender watercolor portrait painted in 2022. I was deeply moved by the gentle vulnerability of the bilby, one of Australia's most endangered and endearing marsupials. Using soft watercolor washes in sandy ochres, warm greys, and delicate pinks, I captured the bilby's distinctive rabbit-like ears, pointed snout, and silky fur against the arid desert landscape it calls home. The atmospheric background suggests the harsh yet beautiful environment where these nocturnal creatures quietly persist, their large dark eyes conveying both alertness and a haunting fragility.

The Greater Bilby, also called the rabbit-eared bandicoot, is a uniquely Australian marsupial that has survived for over 15 million years but now teeters on the brink of extinction. Unlike rabbits (which are invasive in Australia), bilbies are native ecosystem engineers their extensive burrow systems, which can be up to three meters deep, provide shelter for over 45 other species including reptiles, birds, and invertebrates. In Aboriginal culture, bilbies hold significant place in Dreamtime stories, representing resourcefulness, adaptation, and survival against odds.

Since 1991, the bilby has been promoted as Australia's "Easter Bilby" alternative to the Easter Bunny a campaign to raise awareness about this endangered species while celebrating an authentic Australian icon. Bilbies can survive without drinking water, obtaining all moisture from their food. Their keen hearing, represented by those magnificent ears, allows them to detect insects and seeds underground. Sadly, habitat loss and introduced predators have reduced their range by over 70%.
