Bathurst Road in Snowfall

Available professionally framed in White, Black, Natural, Gold, or Brown timber frames, or as a Stretched Ready-to-Hang Canvas.

Atmospheric watercolor landscape painted in 2022. I was captivated by the rare sight of snow blanketing the Bathurst region, transforming familiar Australian countryside into a monochromatic winter wonderland. Using predominantly indigo and Payne's grey watercolors with strategic white space, I captured the misty, cold morning as vehicles navigate the snow-covered highway. The towering poplar sentinel, power lines stretching into fog, and the red glow of taillights create depth and narrative in this uniquely Australian snow scene a phenomenon most Australians never witness.

Did you know?

Snow in inland New South Wales, particularly around Bathurst, is relatively rare but spectacular when it occurs. Bathurst, established in 1815, is Australia's oldest inland European settlement and sits at approximately 650 meters elevation just high enough for occasional winter snowfalls that transform the typically warm, dry landscape. These rare snow events create temporary magic, with locals and visitors alike marveling at the transformation. The Great Western Highway connecting Bathurst to Sydney has witnessed countless journeys since the 1830s, from gold rush prospectors to modern commuters.

The poplar tree not native to Australia but planted by European settlers longing for familiar landscapes stands as a symbol of adaptation and belonging. These deciduous trees mark the seasons in ways eucalyptus cannot, their bare winter branches and autumn gold providing European aesthetic comfort in an alien land. Snow on Australian roads creates unique hazards for drivers unaccustomed to winter conditions, making these journeys both beautiful and treacherous. The scene captures that quintessentially Australian experience of seasons behaving unexpectedly, reminding us that this ancient continent still surprises its inhabitants.
